semi-automatic Kjeldahl nitrogen analyzer is a specialized instrument designed to determine the nitrogen content in organic and inorganic samples, widely used in food, agriculture, environmental science, and feed industries. Based on the classical Kjeldahl method, it automates the most time-consuming and labor-intensive steps while retaining some manual operations for flexibility.
The process typically involves three main stages: digestion, distillation, and titration. Sample digestion, where organic nitrogen is converted to ammonium sulfate using concentrated sulfuric acid and a catalyst, is often performed manually or with external digesters. The semi-automatic system then takes over for the distillation and titration. It automatically adds alkali to liberate ammonia, distills it into a receiving solution, and titrates the solution to determine nitrogen content. Key components include a distillation unit, an automatic burette for titrant delivery, and a control panel.
Its primary advantage lies in balancing cost, control, and efficiency. It significantly reduces analysis time and operator error compared to fully manual setups, while remaining more affordable than fully automated systems. The semi-automatic design allows technicians to monitor and intervene at critical points, making it suitable for laboratories with variable sample types and volumes. It ensures high reproducibility and accuracy for quality control, nutritional labeling, and research applications, offering a reliable and practical solution for routine nitrogen/protein determination.
